Web Hosting
Webhosting by definition is a mode of internet hosting that gives persons, organizations or establishments an avenue through which their respective websites may be accessible on the internet. Web hosting companies are thus entities which provide space on a server to their clients for web hosting purposes and they may also avail internet connectivity to their clients as well. Web hosting began in earnest in the 90's but grew due to the fact that not all companies had the monetary ability to own their own computers and servers to enable them undertake their own web hosting. Thus companies offering web hosting services began to sprout. The rest as they say is history as today nearly all companies envisage having an online presence hence the unprecedented growth of web hosting companies.
There are various types of web hosting services available to clients all catered to suit their diverse individual needs.
They are as listed below:
Shared Hosting
In this mode, the respective website therein is hosted along with other websites. They also tend to share server resources such as RAM, CPU and bandwidth. They are economical and cheap to run and maintain. However, performance issues may arise as a result of the sharing involved.
Reseller Web Hosting
This above-mentioned mode facilitates the respective clients to become web hosts themselves. Most resellers in this instance or case tend to provide nearly identical services to their respective parent host providers and they also offer the technical support aiding to persons who procure their services.
Virtual Dedicated Server
This is also known as a Virtual Private Server (VPS), server resources are divide into virtual severs, where the respective resources can be allocated a in a way that does not directly reflect the said respective underlying hardware in use. Due to the sharing aspect, expenses are lessened since you are still using one server. One can however compartmentalize it to act as various multiple shared hosting servers. One can also set up their own preferred operating system and hence one is in control of the same.
Dedicated hosting service
In this mode of hosting, one does not share their respective server with any other customer thus the name dedicated. One is in total control of everything from any upgrades to security concerns. One can install whatever they want and can access the root of the server. They exist in two sets; some that are unmanaged (whereby one controls everything) and the managed ones; whereby someone else does for you the set up and ,may also upgrade it for you at your call. Performance for dedicated servers is very high as they are seldom disturbed by other sites. However, they are expensive and costly to run and maintain.
Cloud Hosting
This is a new type of Web hosting that has taken the world by storm. In this mode, one does not need a specific machine to act as your server. One's site is hosted across several other machines that have a load balancer shared between them. This basically means that in the event that one's machines goes down, the load is then redistributed to the other available machines in the said respective cloud. It is hence more reliable compared to other types of Web hosting and is also powerful. It is also fair in its billing system as one only pays for the resources that one has used as opposed to a fixed fee. It is however sensitive to security issues especially for organizations or companies with security concerns as ones data is constantly moving from one server to another, technically speaking.
Managed Hosting Service
In this type of hosting, one user gets their own Web server but is not allowed full control over the same as one is denied access to the root. This is done by the provider in a bid to guarantee quality of service. Here, the server is usually leased to the client and thus the client does not own it completely. It is quite expensive as a hosting providing entity usually manages it for the said client. The respective managing entity is usually responsible for security issues, performance concerns and tweaking where need be.
Home Server
For this mode of hosting, it is more often than not applied in individual private residences. Broadband connection is the foundation on which it subsists. In most instances, it is usually just one computer being used. It may however be used or applied to host more than one website.
